How do you read that and think she’s conflating white supremacists and conservatives?
She references moderates and centrists too. She’s just talking about the very real tendency of people in the establishment to either tolerate fascists or to draw false equivalencies, denouncing extremists on “both sides.” Even members of the liberal press will write stories romanticizing fascists.
There is a long history of this. Read about the German Revolution and how the Social Democrats were willing support the Freikorps, the forerunner to the Nazis, as the lesser evil.
They received considerable support from Minister of Defence Gustav Noske, a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany. Noske used them to crush the German Revolution of 1918–19 and the Marxist Spartacist League, including arresting Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg, who were killed on 15 January 1919.
If I point this out, I’m not saying social democracy and Nazism are the same thing am I?
