“Independents hate socialism” is a sweeping generalization that’s on shaky empirical ground since “independent” is an eclectic and nebulously defined category. What does “independent” mean? Libertarian? Nazi? LaRouchite? Anarchist? I’m an independent and I’m a socialist. Bernie Sanders is an independent and he’s also a socialist.

A more useful category is “Democratic Leaning Independent.”

In the last 2018 Gallup Poll, Democrats and Democrat-leaning independent voters had a more favorable view of socialism than capitalism (57 to 47) by a wide margin.

So yes I have anecdotes, too, (me and all my independent socialist friends) and have data shows a trend toward a more favorable view of socialism. My anecdotes and data say that people are warming up to socialism. We can’t both be right, can we?

Anyways, I’m writing another post about this specific objection to Sanders, so I don’t really want to write all the same stuff twice. You can see it when it’s out tomorrow or the next day.
