The biggest argument I hear being made against cancelling student debts is that it’s unfair to those who worked hard to pay theirs off, but speaking as someone who paid off $40,000 in debt in 10 years, I will be overjoyed if all student debt gets cancelled.
It’s just good policy. Not only does it stimulate demand by putting money in the pocket of people who are more likely to spend it but it also frees recent graduates of a terrible burden that might dissuade them from choosing a low-paying but socially vital job, like teaching or social work.
