The story is told from my perspective, so the reason why you have the impression that he is making progress is that I am portraying him accurately as I see him. I love my dad, but he is like all white people, myself included, a racist to some degree. You can’t live in a country built on a foundation of slavery and genocide and not grow up somewhat racist.

An example I like to point to is Nelson Mandela. The first time he got on a plane with a black pilot, he was terrified because he didn’t think black people could fly planes. That’s what being raised in a racist system does to a person’s mentality.
