This is a bunch of weasel words. “Many acts of violence” How many? “resulted in a death” Whose? Who killed whom?
Either you didn’t actually read this article or anything else about the incident at NWDC or this is in extremely bad faith.
The only person who died was Willem Van Spronsen, who was shot by the police. It was a suicide-by-cop scenario. The “incendiary devices” he used were actually road flares, and the only property destroyed was a 2002 Volkswagen that his daughter lent him. I’ve talked to her. She’s confirmed the make and model with the Tacoma police.
I actually said very clearly in the article that antifascists have committed violence but “not anything that a reasonable person would call terrorism,” and I stand by that statement. At worst, there was that bike lock assault a couple of years ago and Andy Ngo, neither of which would meet the definition of “terrorism.” At Trump’s inauguration, a limousine was burnt and they broke some windows. For that, hundreds of people were illegally kettled by the police and threatened with 70-year-sentences. They also were subjected to unnecessary full body cavity searches as a form of humiliation and punishment.
But thank you Tarun for proving my basic point, i.e. that this is about drawing a false equivalence to distract from the real terror that is being perpetrated by the far-right on nearly a monthly basis.
Just this week at the Gilroy Garlic Festival a white nationalist murdered three people, including a 6-year-old child. He had posted on Instagram about “hordes of mestizos” and recommended a 19th-century far-right manifesto called Might is Right by Ragnar Redbeard.
The other main point I made is that outlawing any domestic organization is unconstitutional and a threat to civil liberties, something I would think a “libertarian” such as yourself would be concerned about.
