Why did we bother trying to impeach him? That’s a good question, Matthew. I have an answer for you, but before I get to it, I want to pose some other good questions, if you’ll humor me.

Here’s one: Why did the Democratic Party devote so much time, media attention and political capital to a doomed spectacle when it would have been better spent on opposing Trump’s lifetime appointments to federal court seats?

Trump has appointed nearly 200 judges to federal benches, about half of whom are members of the ultra-conservative Federalist Society. On average they’re in their 40s.

He confirmed 23 in December 2019, accounting for nearly a quarter while the whole country was distracted by the impeachment proceedings. In most of these cases, a hefty chunk of Democrats broke ranks with the party to approve his picks.

The column in the right represents the Democrats’ feeble opposition to this takeover.

Another question.

Bernie Sanders will likely be the nominee. He has the best case right now for electability in the general by far. He has a formidable grassroots organization and a massive fundraising list. The latest Quinnipiac head-to-head shows him leading Trump by 8 points. The latest polling from my home state Texas has him only trailing Trump by 2, which is within the MoE, so he’s basically in a good position to flip some red states. He beats Trump in every state Clinton lost.

So given these facts, why did Hillary Clinton trash him and get all cagey when asked if she would endorse him if he’s the nominee with the full knowledge that it could hurt him in the general? Why is the DNC stacking the rules committee with hardline anti-Bernie folks? Why did the DNC change the rules at the last minute to get Bloomberg on the debate stage?

The answer: They want to deny him the 50 percent of pledged delegates he needs to get the nomination in the first round, so they can hand it to someone else in the second.

The Democrats will do everything in their power to stop Trump except nominate Bernie Sanders. This is absolute lunacy.

So back to your first question. Why bother with impeachment? Because the Democratic Party is intellectually, morally and politically bankrupt and they need to put on a big show of how principled and moral they are relative to Trump. It’s easier than getting real stuff done.

Any reasonable person can see that the Democratic Party obviously considers Sanders a greater threat than Trump. They can live with Trump for four more years because it gives them a raison d’etre. So long as Trump exists as the Greatest of Evils, then their failure and cowardice looks good by comparison.

This was literally one of their 2018 slogans:

Since I’ve answered your question fairly adequately, maybe you can answer one of mine: Why should I pledge my loyalty to a corrupt and inept party that is more concerned with their own power than the American people?

The Democratic party needs to be taken over by its progressive or it needs to die. There’s no middle ground here. The choice is: Bernie or Barbarism.
