Yeah, I feel that. I’m planning on a follow-up about the more polite racism in my own family. Like my mother, who is otherwise a kind and lovely woman, used to make jokes post-911 about the Pakistanis who owned the local convenience store being a “sleeper cell.” It’s hard not to grow up with at least a little bit of internalized racism in such extreme isolation. I never had a meaningful interaction with a black person until I was in college.
